Our 5 Hour Kenai Fjords Wildlife Cruise explores the calm, protected waters and rugged coastline of Resurrection Bay. You will experience up-close encounters with wildlife as we guide our ship along massive bird rookeries and sea lion colonies, stopping along the route to view passing whales and otters. You will see alpine glaciers tucked in the surrounding Chugach and Kenai Mountain Ranges and cruise by Bear Glacier, a piedmont glacier and the largest glacier in Kenai Fjords National Park. A National Park Ranger* will be onboard to narrate your cruise. The protected waters of Resurrection Bay are calmer than the open waters visited on our longer Kenai Fjords National Park cruises, making this tour a better option for those who are concerned about seasickness.
This cruise aligns with same-day, round-trip transportation on the Alaska Railroad. The train arrives in Seward at 11:05 a.m. and the cruise departs at 12:00 p.m., giving you plenty of time to walk to our South Harbor Office to the check-in (7 minute walk from the Alaska Railroad Depot). We also offer a free shuttle that picks up at the depot and drops off at the check-in office. When the cruise returns at 5:00 p.m., you will have enough time to walk or take the shuttle to the depot and board the train before the 6:00 p.m. departure. More information can be found on our transportation page.

Will I see a glacier on this cruise?
This cruise does not visit a tidewater glacier (a glacier that ends in the ocean). However, you may see Bear Glacier, which is the largest glacier in Kenai Fjords National Park. Bear Glacier is a piedmont/valley glacier that ends in a freshwater lake. We are not able to cruise to the face of the glacier because it ends 4 miles beyond the shoreline, but it is visible from a distance along our route if weather permits. You may also view alpine glaciers perched high in the mountains.
Will I get seasick on this cruise?
You will be cruising through the calm, protected waters of Resurrection Bay, where the likeliness of seasickness is typically low. If you are prone to seasickness, we recommend taking motion sickness medication such as Dramamine or Bonine before the cruise. This medication can be purchased at our check-in offices and onboard our cruises.
Will I see any whales on this cruise?
While we cannot guarantee whale sightings, our captains visit wildlife hot spots and communicate with other vessels about recent wildlife sightings to give our guests the best chances of viewing whales. On average, we see whales on 75% of our 5 Hour Kenai Fjords Wildlife Cruises. The longer you are on the water, the greater your chances are of seeing whales.
Is food included on this cruise?
On this cruise we serve our optional Alaska Salmon & Prime Rib Meal for $27.00 per adult and $13.50 per child. The meal can be added to your reservation up to 24 hours prior to your cruise. We also have a snack bar onboard, and you are more than welcome to bring your own food with you. Glass containers and personal alcohol are not permitted.
We took our 10, 8, and twin 6 year olds on the 5 hour Wildlife Cruise with Major Marine tours in early June. We picked this cruise because there is a National Park Ranger onboard and the kids can earn a Junior Ranger badge while out on the water. We were not disappointed. Not only did they have the junior ranger program and some one on one time to ask the ranger questions, but there was also a staff member from the Sealife Center in Seward who was a big help. They provided some hands on activities for the kids when the wildlife was shy so that there wasn’t a lull in the cruise. The kids loved feeling the cold water and then using the blubber provided around their hand to see how a whale is protected against the cold. We saw lots of wildlife too: Kittwakes, Otters, Bald Eagles, and 5 Humpback Whales. The captain made sure we had plenty of time to view the sealife! Totally will be going again.

Our 5 hour cruise with Capt. Chris Danzl and his crew was excellent from departure at the docks to our return in the evening. Every member of the crew came together to make the afternoon a relaxing and engaging experience. Matthew kept the meal and activities rolling and Ranger Deb was a real asset to the cruise, providing a thoughtful narration to the stunning scenery. The wildlife was spectacular, but I thought we had missed out on seeing whales for the day. However, Capt. Chris extended our cruise farther than usual and pulled us right next to a beautiful set of humpbacks for an amazing show while still getting us back to the docks in time for the folks boarding the train at 5:30. If you are in Seward and only have time for one adventure, make it a trip with Major Marine Tours.
My husband surprised me with a 5 hour wildlife cruise. It was breathtaking! We were fortunate as the weather was beautiful. We were greeted by our captain and crew, nice touch. Once on board, we met Greg, our Park Ranger. During our trip, Greg gave us a ton of information about the area and the wildlife we fortunate to see along the way, as well as point out amazing points of interest. The crew served a fantastic lunch of salmon and prime rib, which we had purchased ahead of time. Definitely an awesome trip! I would highly recommend arriving to Seward early and checking out the quaint little town.
