4 Reasons why Fall is the Best Time to Visit Seward

The MMT Blog / 4 Reasons why Fall is the Best Time to Visit Seward

The majority of visitors to Seward arrive during our peak season from June through August, when city streets are bustling with activity, the midnight sun allows for non-stop adventures, and migrating marine wildlife have settled in for a summer of feeding in Alaska’s nutrient-rich waters. As summer fades into fall and the sun begins to set earlier and earlier each day, the number of visitors to Seward reduces dramatically. By the beginning of October, the streets are quiet, the leaves are changing, and Seward seems like an entirely different place than it did only a month before. However, this shoulder season from September through mid-October is one of the best times to visit this beautiful town. And, since having plenty of space is even more important this year, this fall is an ideal time to get out and about away from the summer crowds. Now is the time to plan your fall adventures in Seward. Here are the top 4 reasons why you should visit Seward this fall

There’s Still Lots To Do

There are still plenty of activities to do during the shoulder season. Major Marine Tours cruises run until October 13th, with our 6 Hour Kenai Fjords National Park Cruise running until September 24th and our 4 Hour Kenai Fjords Wildlife Cruise running until October 9th. The Alaska SeaLife Center is open year-round and there is plenty to see this fall, including close-up views of rescued and rehabilitated sea otters, harbor seals, and Steller sea lions. The area’s many beautiful hiking trails are always open, and you will enjoy them even more with the fall colors. The road to the popular Exit Glacier area is usually open until November. Most Seward restaurants are open through September and some are open year-round, including Flamingo LoungeApollo’s, and Woody’s Thai Kitchen.

Fall Colors

Many locals say the fall is their favorite season in Alaska. Alaska is beautiful in all seasons, but the colorful days of fall offer their own unique, fleeting beauty. The trees are illuminated in shades of yellow and orange, the air is crisp, and the mountains are even more dramatic with their first dusting of snow. The beauty of the drive between Anchorage and Seward alone is enough to justify a trip to Seward in the fall.

Peace, Quiet, and More Space

If you’ve ever driven the Seward Highway on a sunny summer weekend it’s apparent how many people are out and about in Alaska in the summertime. This summer was a little quieter than normal, but we have still experienced the typical hustle and bustle of Alaskan summer as locals and some visitors have been exploring our great state. Summer is a wonderful time for Alaskan adventures but fall gives you a chance to experience a calmer, quieter Alaska. The roads aren’t as busy. The hiking trails provide peace and solitude. There is more space on tours and activities. There is plenty of space at RV parks and campgrounds. The list goes on and on. As we are all seeking extra space this year, fall is the ideal time to get our and explore Alaska.
