The MMT Blog / Spring Gray Whale Cruise Season is Here!

Perhaps it’s all this sun we’ve been having in Southcentral Alaska this past month, but it certainly feels like spring is just around the corner. With spring comes longer days, warmer temperatures, and…gray whales! Every year we celebrate the return of migrating whales to the waters outside of Seward on our Gray Whale Watching Cruise. This year, our Gray Whale Watching Cruise started March 4th and runs daily until May 14th. We have been seeing lots of wildlife on so far this year including humpback whales, orca whales, Steller sea lions, Dall’s porpoises, sea otters, harbor seals, mountain goats, and eagles. We haven’t spotted our first gray whale yet, but they will be arriving in Alaskan waters any day now!

Gray Whale

Gray whales embark on one of the longest migration routes of any mammal. Each year, they migrate 5,000 miles from Baja California to their summer feeding grounds in the Bering and Chukchi Seas. They arrive in Alaska waters in the spring on their journey north, spending the summer feeding in shallow arctic waters before they begin their migration back to Baja in mid-October. Over the course of the year they will travel over 10,000 miles round-trip.

We invite you to give in to spring fever and join us in witnessing the return of these incredible migrating animals to Alaska. Our Gray Whale Watching Cruise departs Seward at noon and travels 55 miles through Resurrection Bay to the opening of the Gulf of Alaska, returning at 4:00 p.m. To make a reservation for this cruise, call us at (907) 274-7300 or make your reservation online.
